When winter comes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, a lot of them can be linked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not taken care of, your system may suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system ends up with the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises around the end of their life. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice more symptoms. Some other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these signs sound like what you are feeling with your furnace, it might be time to start thinking about a new system.
